⚡ Essential Survival Tips

⚠️ Altitude Sickness (AMS) — Most Critical

  • Ascend max 500m per day above 3,000m. Rest days are NOT optional.
  • Symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath — take seriously.
  • Descend 300-500m immediately if symptoms worsen. HACE/HAPE are life-threatening.
  • Diamox 125mg twice daily (consult doctor). Drink 3-4 litres water daily.

🏍️ Vehicle & Fuel

  • Best bikes: Royal Enfield Himalayan, KTM 390/490 Adventure, Hero Xpulse 200
  • Carry 5-10L extra fuel — stations can be 150+ km apart
  • Zanskar/Sach Pass: carry 20L minimum — stations almost non-existent
  • Check tyre pressure daily. Carry 2 spare tubes + puncture kit + tow rope

📡 Communication

  • BSNL SIM is best — covers most of Ladakh and Spiti
  • Airtel/Jio: very patchy. No signal in Zanskar, Sach Pass, Hanle
  • Download offline maps: Maps.me or OsmAnd before departure
  • BRO road updates: Twitter @bro_himank and @bro_beacon

💰 Money & ATMs

  • ATMs: Manali, Leh, Kargil, Srinagar only. Kaza has 1 (often out of service)
  • Padum has NO ATMs — carry ₹20,000+ cash minimum
  • Emergency helpline: Himachal 1100 | Ladakh Police: 01982-252018
